Tiger Woods Tells Awesome Story of John Daly Crushing Diet Coke at the 2007 PGA Championship – OutKick

Tiger Woods went into storytelling mode Tuesday at a PGA Championship press conference where he shared a fond memory of John Daly at the 2007 PGA Championship in the sweltering heat of the Southern Hills.

Known for its Diet Coke consumption levels, Daly was featured entirely in the 2007 heat of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

According to Tiger, the story goes that he asked Daly how much water he drank during his tour. Daly’s response was that he didn’t drink any water and instead crushed about 13 Diet Cokes as temperatures sent at least 264 people to treatment for heat exhaustion during the 2007 tournament.

Tiger finished 8 under and won the championship while Daly finished a tie for 32 in plus-6, but he gave the world another great story that will live on forever in the traditions of golf history.

If there were 13 Cokes and nothing watery that seemed implausible, you clearly have no appreciation for the golf gods who have brought John Daly into our arms over the past three decades.

During a 2016 interview with Graham Bensinger, Daly outlined some of the consumption habits that have made him the living legend that golf enthusiasts can’t get enough of.

“I’ve been drinking anywhere from 12 to 20 Diet Cokes a day,” Daly said. “I’d go to McDonald’s three to four times a day. For me, they’ve always had the best diet coke. You know I don’t drink water. I hate water. I can’t stand drinking water.”

“I used to be able to eat two Big Macs, two or three cheeseburgers, a chocolate shake, and a regular Coke back then before I easily started drinking Diet Coke in a sitting,” Daly recalls.

Internet mathematicians discovered that during John’s advent, he was putting out 515 gallons of Diet Coke every year.

In 2014, Daly claimed at some point in his life that he drank 26-28 cans of Diet Coke every day. As for cigarettes, Big John said at the time he smoked upwards of 40 smokes a day.

“Some guys want to do some cardio; I can’t see they let me smoke a cigarette on the treadmill,” Daly said. “I don’t think they would let me into the gym if I did. Will they do that? “
