Steven Bergwijn approaches the door as Ajax and Tottenham negotiate

Well, that didn’t take long now, did it?

Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax are close to a deal that will see Dutch international Steven Bergwijn move across the channel to join the Eredivisie champions. This comes from Dutch journalist Mike Ferroy, who seems to think clubs meet in the middle over fees.

It was reported yesterday that Spurs’ valuation was around €30m while Ajax rejected an initial offer of €17m. Ajax were persistent in this pursuit and were not about to stop chasing him, especially with Fabrizio Romano saying that many clubs are interested. Despite this, this step makes a lot of sense for all parties involved.

This is not a done deal, of course. Verweij is very reliable but this is not an official offer notification. Neither writers have confirmed this win for Spurs, but Alasdair Gold and Dan Kilpatrick have said in recent weeks that the move will happen, regardless of whether it is Ajax or not.

It’s a shame that Bergwijn couldn’t get extra minutes because he’s a strong striker, but Dejan Kulusevski’s quick appearance in this team closed the door to his chance. Bergwijn needs first-team minutes and, what’s more, a place where he can start every game. Ajax ticks all the boxes plus he’s going home.

For now, it’s just a matter of when, not whether, this will happen.
