Detroit’s Annelies Bergman of the Oakland Grizzlies was in Team USA’s 6-1 goal against Sweden in their 2022 FIFA U-18 Women’s World Championship preliminary round match Monday at Laban Arena in Madison, Wisconsin.

Cassandra Hall of South Lyon scored two goals and one assist, Kristen Sims of Plymouth added assists, Franklin’s Elisa Biederman scored once and Bergman saved 20 saves for the American team.

The match was the national team’s first international competition in 887 days. The team last participated on January 2, 2020, in the 2002 Worlds U-18 Gold Medal Match. Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win the gold medal.

The 2021 U18 WWC has been canceled due to COVID and the 2022 tournament has been rescheduled from January in Sweden to June in Madison due to COVID as well.

Team USA will face Finland on Tuesday.

Detroit Red Wings pick Sebastian Kosa was part of Wayne Gretzky’s viral video ahead of Game Two of the Western Hockey League Final between Kosa Edmonton Oil Kings and Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday in Edmonton.

Gretsky entered the Oil Kings dressing room and wished the team good luck. He then introduced fellow TNT Paul “Biz Nasty” Bissonnette to announce the team’s starting line-up: “And every bit of Yzerplan, it starts with the grid…Cossa!!!”

Koussa, the 6-foot-6 goalkeeper who was transferred in the first round of the NHL Draft last year, made 26 saves in Edmonton’s 5-4 loss and is now 13-2-0 with 2.11 goals-to-average in the playoffs . The WHL Final was tied 1-1 with Game 3 in Seattle on Tuesday.

Two wins from the OHL title

Livonia and Detroit Red Wings’ Ryan Abraham helped Pascual Zito as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Hamilton Bulldogs in Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League Final at the WFCU Center in Windsor on Monday.

Windsor leads the final best score 2-1 with Match 4 in Windsor on Friday.

Also on Monday, Flint Firebirds goalkeeper Luke Cavallin signed an American Hockey League contract with the Toronto Marlies.
