The four teams secured a place on the field due to the championships in their respective leagues. Lyon lifted the French title, in addition to winning the European Women’s Champions League for the eighth time, a record after beating Barcelona in Turin last month.

Chelsea crowned the WSL World Series of Poker, while Monterrey won the 2021 Apertura title in Liga MX, and Thorns of the Women’s National Football League was a Fans Shield and Challenge Cup winner last year.

Portland is also the defending champion of the WICC. Last year, Morgan Weaver came off the bench and scored in the 87th minute to give Thorns a 1-0 win over Lyon.

Lyon coach: “We are very happy to play against good teams like Chelsea and Portland because we know we will play competitive matches, and that is very good for the girls, because they play in the big matches.” Sonia Bombastor said.

“So it is important to be able to play against the best teams and play in a country where women’s football is popular.”

New York-based Relevant Sports Group, which also put together the International Champions Cup for men’s club teams, added the women’s competition in 2018. The inaugural event was held in the Miami area. The 2019 edition was in Cary, North Carolina, and hosted by NWSL’s Courage. Temporarily discontinued in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Portland has impressed us last year with the club’s support and strong excitement from some of the best football fans in the world,” WICC President Susie Fiore said in a statement.

The competition will be broadcast live in English and Spanish on ESPN networks in the United States and will be broadcast globally in more than 140 regions.
