Sounders International Tour: Xavier Arreaga gets time at right back

Six Seattle Sounders ended up joining different national teams during this international window. Most of them are at least halfway through their games. This is where we stand now:

In a positive sign for his possible inclusion in the World Cup squad, Arega has played in both Ecuador’s two matches so far. The last match – a 0-0 draw with Mexico – saw Arriaga start and play 90 minutes. Interestingly enough, he was posted as a right-back. Arreaga wasn’t particularly effective in his passing – scoring just 22 for 32 – but had two chances made. He also won 6 out of 7 duels. Ecuador has another match scheduled for Saturday against Cape Verde. He should be back in time to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on June 14.

The United States played their first two friendlies in Spain on Monday with a 2-1 victory over England. Baker-Whiting came off the bench and was apparently one of the better players. He got help with the match-winning goal. The United States next play Norway on Thursday. Baker Whiting is scheduled to return to Seattle when camp closes on June 10.

Neither player has taken part in any of the USA friendlies, but they may get a few minutes in the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League matches against Grenada (June 10) and El Salvador (June 14). If, for some reason, Greg Berhalter learns that one or both of them will not play in El Salvador, he can send them home. With both players remaining in contention for the World Cup roster, this seems unlikely.

In his first appearance with the national team since November, Rusnak played in both games and scored around 100 minutes. He came off the bench to play 30 minutes in a 1-0 win over Belarus, and Slovakia scored their goal immediately after Rusnak entered. Rusnak then started against Kazakhstan in a 1-0 loss, playing a more advanced role than he was primarily used to with the Sounders. He completed 44 out of 48 passes but didn’t seem to be causing much of a risk. Slovakia has two more UEFA Nations League matches, Friday in Azerbaijan and Monday against Kazakhstan. Unless he is sent home early, Rusnak will not be available for the Whitecaps match.

Cameroon’s first scheduled match against Kenya has been cancelled, but they have another scheduled Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi on Thursday. Nohu must return to Seattle in sufficient time to be available for a Whitecaps match.
