Rochester Parks & Rick hears options for the future of Solgers Field Golf Course

ROCHESTER, Minnesota (KTTC) – Many avid golfers have expressed concern about potential changes to Soldiers Field golf course.

On Tuesday, the Rochester Parks, Parks and Recreation Council heard from the city’s advisor about a “master plan update” for Soldiers Memorial Field Park.

Two years ago, the city approved a referendum to invest the parks. The city plans to use $7 million from the referendum, plus any grant funding to improve Soldier Field.

The plan includes three options including a golf course.

First concept:

  • The 18-hole golf course will remain.
  • Reconfigure holes 2, 3 and 4 to expand the aquarium facility.
  • Vegetarian displays around the golf maintenance building.

Second concept:

  • Reducing the golf course to 9 holes
  • Reconfigure holes 8, 13, 15 and 18.
  • Move the golf practice area and maintenance building.
  • Add a golf course.

Third concept:

  • Golf course, club and maintenance building removed.

“I think the first concept where we maintain the golf course and modify some other parts of the park, is probably a better idea,” said golfer Steve Swanson.

The golf course has been around for nearly 100 years.

“It serves old and young and people who are not really good at golf. Especially in Soldiers Square, it is very convenient,” Swanson said. “It’s classic golf. Soldiers’ Square provides a low-cost facility to many people.”

A city community survey showed that 54 percent of survey respondents use the golf course.

There will be a public poll open to the public to share their feedback on the different options.
