There is no denying that the Major League referees have a very difficult task ahead. They are tasked with making split-second decisions on incoming pitches with triple speed and ridiculous movement. But they are also supposed to be the best referees in the world, which has caused some critical errors that we’ve seen this season so bafflingly.
About a week after referee Hunter Wendelstedt easily made the worst strike call we’ll see this season, referee Ed Hickox may have made the worst ball call of the season. With Cody Bellinger on the plate opposite Dylan Cease of the White Sox, Bellinger was frozen on a bad joint bend with the late action overturning the plate.
Apparently he cheated Hickox as well because the referee for a long time shot the field a ball.

Fortunately for the White Sox, the call didn’t make much of an impact as Bellinger would hit a few pitches later. But MLB fans weren’t happy to see a referee call up a ball in the middle of the field.
