Presnel Kimpembe has racked up a new career in matches, minutes and even goals scored this season, truly becoming a strong central defender at Paris Saint-Germain. And he’s about to turn 27 with two years left on his contract, so he’s also positioning himself high in terms of theoretical transfer value — or wages in a new contract.
That could be bad news for the bank balances of any interested team, one of whom could be Chelsea, without the primary concern this summer being rebuilding the defence.
We’ve been linked with Kimpembe before – and our transfer connections with PSG are fairly strong over the past few years – but if France Football’s Olivier Broussard is believable, there could be some work going on behind the scenes as well. Former Kimpembe teammate Thiago Silva is personally trying to convince the man a decade younger than him to follow him to Chelsea. (By the way, Kimpembe was set to be Silva’s heir, which was one of the reasons PSG were willing to let Silva go a couple of years ago. It turns out that’s a pretty good thing, for everyone involved.)
There is no number associated with these rumours but it is unlikely that our primary defensive targets will come cheap (€65m+), whether called Jules Conde, Matisse de Ligt or anyone else. (Another reason not to forget to look at our own, too.)
