In addition to appearing in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup Finals, he represented Mexico in the 2013 and 2017 Confederations Cup and the Copa America Centenary Cup in 2016.
Herrera recently led Mexico to the finals of the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. His regional accolades include the CONCACAF Best XI Awards in 2017 and 2018, as well as the IFFHS CONCACAF Best XI in 2020.
