4 teams that would sign Baker Mayfield minutes after release

NFL executives believe Baker Mayfield will be released by Brown, and if so, one of these four teams will add him as soon as possible

The Cleveland Browns were adamant that they would not release Baker Mayfield. Although there is no scenario in which the midfielder and team work together again, they refuse to let it go without getting something of value in return.

Even as they hold up, there is a belief in league circles that Brown will ultimately have no choice but to eventually sever ties. If that happens, these four teams will definitely jump at the chance to add Mayfield as soon as he becomes available.

Currently, the New York Giants are set to meet Daniel Jones in his fourth season in the NFL. Previously a first-round pick from Duke, Jones has run bad seasons in a row as he had only 11 touchdown passes in 2020 and 10 in 2021.

To make matters worse for Jones, the Giants are in the midst of another head coach change. Out is Joe Judge and in Brian Daboll, who has risen to prominence in recent years thanks to his work with Josh Allen as the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator.

There is some hope that Daboll will be as good for Jones as Allen was, but we’re kidding ourselves if we look at how the quarterbacks played last season and think Jones could be on the same path.

What is more likely is that Jones will be a free agent in 2023 and the Giants will once again be looking for a new midfielder. But they probably won’t need to.

Instead of only banking with Jones — with Tyrod Taylor as Plan B — the New Yorkers could take a ride on Baker Mayfield assuming he hits the open market and they could sign him for the minimum league.

Adding it would give them a year to see if they thought the previous first public pick could be the start for them in the long run – and if not, the risk was minimal.
