Erling Haaland: The Target Machine

Haaland’s career so far has been marked by one thing: goals.

He has hit the back of the net at an astonishing rate in the six years since his professional debut and his attributes mean he is the heart of the attack in every sense of the word.

Strong, tall, fast, good in the air and able to score a variety of goals both with footing, he will provide this City side with the option of an on-and-off striker who has not been available since the departure of Sergio Aguero last summer.

Born in Leeds, where father Alfie was playing in the Premier League, the family moved to Bryan in southern Norway when the youngest Haaland was three years old.

He joined his hometown club before the age of ten and progressed by preparing the youth to make his debut in the Norwegian second division three months before his sixteenth birthday.

A move to Molde followed and the winning goal from the bench on his debut was a sign of things to come. He finished the 2018 season as the club’s top scorer, scoring 12 goals in 25 league games, while he was still just 18 years old.

His form in his home country prompted Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg to move to him in January 2019. He made five appearances in the second half of the season, but at the start of the following season his career really took off and on a larger scale. The world began to notice this amazing sensation.

Between August 2019 and September 2019, the striker hit the net 17 times in nine matches, including hat-tricks, which included a hat-trick in his Champions League debut against Genk.

By the time he joined Dortmund the following January, he had scored 28 goals in 22 games for Salzburg and showed no signs of slowing down in the Bundesliga.

A 23-minute hat-trick in the 5-3 win over Augsburg put the Norwegian up and running in yellow and black, and with doubles in his next two matches, he became the first player in Bundesliga history to score five goals in his first game. Two games and seven in his first three.

Haaland finished the 2019/20 season with 44 goals in 40 games for Salzburg and Dortmund, followed by scoring 41 goals in several matches in 2020/21.

This included four goals against Hertha Berlin and a brace against Sevilla which made him the fastest and youngest player to score 20 goals in the Champions League.

Dortmund finished third behind Red Bull RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, but Haaland scored twice against the former in a 4-1 win in the German Cup final to ensure he finished the season with silverware.

His performances over the course of that campaign were enough to earn him the Bundesliga Player of the Year award, while also finishing as the top scorer in the Champions League to win the competition’s Forward of the Season award.

Haaland was limited to 30 games in the 2021/22 season when he was hampered by injury, but he managed to hit the net on 29 occasions, and in November, he scored his 50th goal in the Bundesliga to become the youngest and fastest player to reach it. Milestones tally.

It was a similar story internationally, with the striker scoring 20 goals in 22 matches for Norway.

He made his debut as a 19-year-old in the 2-0 win over Malta in September 2019 and scored his first goal as he won his third match against Austria 12 months later.

The following month, he achieved his first international hat-trick in the 4-0 defeat to Romania, en route to winning the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League Golden Boot.

His latest international goal arrived on Sunday as he scored twice in the 3-2 victory over Sweden in the UEFA Nations League.

Haaland, a natural born scorer, will seek to replicate his success across the continent in the city’s blue skies.
