Report: Nuggets add former Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders to coaching staff

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Denver Nuggets are expected to add former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders to Michael Malone’s coaching staff.

Saunders replaces former Nuggets assistant coach Jordi Fernandez, who took a job with the Sacramento Kings earlier this off season. Ryan Saunders – the son of basketball coaching legend Philip Saunders – began coaching in the NBA as an assistant with the Washington Wizards in 2009.

After spending four seasons with the Wizards, Saunders was an assistant coach with the Timberwolves before becoming interim head coach in 2019. Saunders eventually got the head coach position and held that position until February 21, 2021 when he was fired after Minnesota started the season. With a 7-24 record.

At just 36 years old, Saunders is still a fairly young coach looking to rekindle his career after his stint in Minnesota. This looks like a great addition to Malone’s coaching staff, and if Saunders succeeds, there’s a very strong chance he might get another coaching opportunity in the future.
