Manchester United have prioritized the signing of a midfielder this summer as the club continues talks with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong.
United also made initial inquiries to Ajax about the winger Anthonyalso known as new coach Erik Ten Hag after he was a regular for Ajax for the past two seasons.
They are also interested in Ajax defenders Joren Timber.
The 22-year-old is one of a number of players United have been looking at – and another one who was tied to Liverpool Darwin Nunezwho is about to join the Reds in a £85m deal from Benfica.
What’s the latest on De Jong?
There has been no official offer yet for De Jong from United as clubs remain separate in their assessment of the 25-year-old, but there is a growing belief on all sides that a deal can be struck.
However, United will focus on other targets if they cannot negotiate a reasonable price with the Spanish giants.
De Jong is a player Ten Hag knows well and has enjoyed a high level of performance having managed the Dutch international at Ajax, where he was part of the team that won the 2018/19 Eredivisie title and reached the Champions League semi-finals.
United are expected to sign at least one midfielder this summer, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata all leaving Old Trafford.
De Jong’s contract with Barcelona runs until the summer of 2026 but the club’s financial problems could mean they are ready to sell this summer.
United make inquiries about Anthony | Nunez wasn’t a top priority target
Another United priority this summer is a striker who can play across the front line, but not necessarily the number nine out of the field.
United have made initial inquiries to Ajax regarding winger Anthony, also known by Ten Hag, as he has played regularly for Ajax’s side over the past two seasons.
The 22-year-old is one of a number of players United have been eyeing – as was Nunez bound for Liverpool.
Sky Sports News The Uruguay striker was told he was not a top priority target while United were not interested in striking a deal at the prices offered.
United have never made a formal bid to the Portuguese side and were not ready to engage in a bidding war for the 22-year-old.
United remain interested in timber
Manchester United also remain interested in Ajax defender Jørn Timber – another player who was a regular fixture under Ten Hag in the Dutch champions.
United are looking for other defenders as well, including Villarreal’s Pau Torres.
But with United so well positioned as a central defender, it is understood that the priority remains to recruit in midfield and attack.
Tin Hag wants to bring in new players in this window but also wants to evaluate his current team.
