World number seven Carlos Alcaraz said winning his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon would be a dream because he still fully remembers the 2008 Wimbledon final between his superstar Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Alcaraz, 19, has had an amazing season winning two Masters titles this year and is now among the top 10 players.
Alcaraz failed to lift his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, but he will have another chance to win a major in two weeks’ time at Wimbledon. “Of course I see that as a possibility,” Alcaraz said. “In the end, this is the dream I’m looking for and working towards every day.”
Alcaraz on the historic Nadal – Wimbledon Federer final
Nadal and Federer had a match for ages when they faced each other in the 2008 Wimbledon final. Back then, Nadal was dominant on clay, while Federer was strong on grass.
After losing to Federer in the Wimbledon finals (2006, 2007), Nadal defeated the Swiss in the 2008 Wimbledon final 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. “Everyone remembers the 2008 final between Nadal and Federer. It was one of the best matches in history and it was amazing.
Rafa has won historic matches many times at Wimbledon, and I tell myself, “I wish I was there to play matches like this.” He is out of his grass season this week at Queens Club but withdrew from the tournament.
Alcaraz said: “I don’t have a lot of experience on grass, but I felt comfortable at Wimbledon in 2021. I’m going there to try and win the championship as in every event I do.” at Wimbledon.
In his first appearance at Wimbledon last year, Alkaraz defeated Yasutaka Uchiyama in the first round, before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
