Mauricio Pochettino sacked from Paris Saint-Germain

Sources told ESPN that Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked as coach of Paris Saint-Germain just months after leading the team to the league title.

The club has yet to announce the Argentine’s departure, but sources told ESPN that an agreement was reached on Wednesday morning. Pochettino had one year left on his contract.

PSG are still trying to secure the signature of their new president. Christophe Galtier, the Nice team manager, is now the front-runner and favorite of new sporting director Luis Campos, who has replaced Leonardo.

Sources told ESPN that discussions are positive and that Galtier, who won the Ligue 1 title before Paris Saint-Germain with Lille, in 2021, is eager for the position.

Zinedine Zidane was a priority for the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the owner of Paris Saint-Germain and was close to Zidane for many years.

Zidane has been without a club since his departure from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, but sources have told ESPN that he wants to coach the French national team after Didier Deschamps left and is unlikely to be the new PSG coach.

Seville coach Julen Lopetegui was also offered, while River Plate’s Marcelo Gallardo and Sporting’s Ruben Amorim were selected.

After Kylian Mbappe largely ignored Real Madrid to sign a new three-year contract with the French champions, Paris Saint-Germain made several changes in the top roles.

Sources told ESPN that one of the main points of Mbappe’s discussions with PSG centered around Leonardo, with whom he had an uneasy relationship.

In one of the many rounds of talks held with the PSG hierarchy, Mbappe said he was not keen on Leonardo as the club’s sporting director next season and has identified transfer coach Campos as a replacement.

Campos, 57, was in Monaco when Mbappe came on the scene and won the Ligue 1 title in 2017, as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals. Campos has a reputation for spotting top talent and securing large transfer fees for hidden gems, with Mbappe one of many notable successes.

Speculation over Pochettino’s future has been rife in the French capital since Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid in the Round of 16, despite their 2-0 lead on aggregate at the end of the second half of the second leg.

Even Paris Saint-Germain’s win of its 10th Ligue 1 title last month was marred by a protest from the club’s ultras, who left the match 15 minutes before the end instead of celebrating with the team’s players.

Pochettino has been strongly linked with taking charge of Manchester United next season before he opted for Premier League giants Eric ten Hag from Ajax.

Sources told ESPN that the decision came with a choice between Tin Hag and Pochettino, with Pochettino’s contract at PSG – he was on a deal until the summer of 2023 – playing a role in United’s eventual choice of the Dutch coach.

Pochettino was appointed coach of Paris Saint-Germain in January 2021, after being sacked by Tottenham at the end of 2019.
