How Matt Fitzpatrick Turned Himself Into a Tall Hitter

If you saw Dustin Johnson and Matt Fitzpatrick walking down the first lane at the US Open toward two golf balls, not many people would blame you for assuming the longer drive belonged to the DJ.

But on a Friday at The Country Club, Fitzpatrick let go of a shorter style.

Matt Fitzpatrick has quietly been making big gains in speed over the past two years, and thanks to some long rides and stellar performance (which put him second halfway through the US Open), whispers about his training program are getting a lot louder.

But another piece of this speed puzzle was Fitzpatrick’s speed training regimen called The Stack. The system customizes the overload and drop program for each golfer using an application integrated with artificial intelligence to adjust it as the golfer moves during training sessions. The app works in conjunction with the Swinging Physical Training Stick to help players build better sequences and swing faster.

It just so happened that the Stack system was co-developed by the previously mentioned Mackenzie, as well as another household name in the golf engineering space: Marty Jertson, vice president of Fitting and Performance at Ping.

To put Fitzpatrick’s gains in perspective, his team’s average speed on the PGA Tour this season has increased more than 5 mph compared to 2019, and Strokes Gained: Off the Tee’s rating is 10th, compared to 59th just three years ago.

With distance becoming increasingly important to competing at the highest level – and one of the key elements to being able to score – there’s probably good reason to try some of your own quick workouts.
