Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova weigh in on transgender athletes – OutKick

Chris Evert was one of the greatest tennis players in history. In 1977, Renee Richards became the first transgender athlete to compete in the women’s lottery in professional tennis. Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova were number 1 and 2 in the world and both played Rene in their careers. Honestly, the troll who came to Chris below doesn’t remember much from 1977.

The 43-year-old Renee was playing two of the best soccer players of all time on a tennis court in their preliminary matches. Chris and Martina won, but they struggled. Chris was 6-0 for life versus 40-year-old Renee. Martina was 3-0, and barely beat Richards in the 1977 Women’s Doubles Final at the US Open. Martina remained close to Richards and worked with her as her coach later in her career. She said Renee knew she had an advantage as an ex-man and that it was an unfair advantage. Martina also tweeted this day.

Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova have a lot of respect for Renee Richards, and they both agree that she has a huge advantage. Had Renee been younger, the history of women’s tennis would have changed forever.
