First look: The Travelers Championship

Five of the top six players in the FedExCup standings will shine in the Travelers Championship, led by number one Scotty Scheffler.

area Notes: The English are back in action after making the cut at the US Open. He was on the shelf from January until the Memorial Championship presented by Workday while he was recovering from hip surgery… Scotty Scheffler, who was competing in the US Open at The Country Club, will look to consolidate his big lead in the FedExCup and Official World Golf standings … Sam Burns, who ranks second in FedExCup, is also set to advance … Among them are PGA 2022 winner Justin Thomas, last season’s FedExCup champ Patrick Cantlay, and Rory McIlroy, who is playing his fourth week in a row at TOUR.. Cantlay shot 60 points at TPC River Highlands in 2011 as an amateur… Jordan Spieth, who won the Travelers’ Trophy in 2017, had a late entry on Friday afternoon… University of Texas superstar Cole Hammer would start his first run as a pro. Other young Travelers stars include Ben James, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Haskins Prize winner Chris Gotrop. James, of Milford, Connecticut, is the top junior in the country, while Chris Gotrop won the Haskins Award as the best junior in college golf this year. Gotterup, now a professional player, took the chops at the US Open… Other players in the field include four-time major winner Brooks Koepka, Ricky Fowler, Xander Shaveli and US Open gatekeeper Joel Dahmin.

a path: TBC River Heights, Bar 70, 6852 yards. One of TOUR’s shortest courses yields low scores but still poses a tough challenge to the best game in the game. This marks the 70th anniversary of the Travelers Championship, where TPC River Highlands has been the tour venue for 39 years. Bobby Weed was the last architect to upgrade the Connecticut course with TOUR players Howard Tweety and Roger Matlbie as advisors. The prime stretch comes when golfers play around a four-acre lake at No. 15-17. TPC River Heights was where Jim Furyk launched the lowest run of the TOUR, a 58 in 2016.

stories: This is the first year since before the COVID-19 pandemic that the Travelers will have a full presence… There’s plenty of firepower on the field at TPC River Highlands, with six of the world’s top 10… giving chances to the game’s shining young stars. This year is set to be no different with James, Thorburnsen, Gotrop and Hammer in the field. Previous waivers have been granted to Sahith Theegala, John Pak, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Cantlay, among others… Every Travelers champion since the 2016 US Open has played the previous week. The English finished third at Torrey Pines a year ago before winning the TPC River Highlands…The Travelers have entered additional holes 25 times, and last year’s eight-hole qualifying was the longest.

The last time: Harris English knocked out the second longest playoff in TOUR history to claim the 2021 Traveler title. After the Englishmen and Kramer Hickok punched the 72nd hole in regulation, the duo went back and forth for seven holes before the English finally flew the eighth extra hole from 5 feet. Hickok missed 36 feet a little earlier. It was the English’s second win this season. Hickok’s runner-up was his career best on the PGA Tour. Mark Leishman finished third.
