Marvel threatens to replace Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel
After Carol Danvers commits the worst magical sin possible, the magic users decide enough is enough – she needs to be replaced as Captain Marvel.
Warning: contains spoilers for Captain Marvel #39!
After making the worst possible magical mistake, Carol Danvers could finally be replaced as Captain Marvel – all thanks to his own actions. Danvers has shown contempt for authority, and his hot temper often causes trouble, for friends and foes alike. But in Captain Marvel #39her actions during a devastating battle with Ove, the Enchantress’s son, eventually catch up to her in a magical trial held by Agatha Harkness and her enemies.
In 2021, Captain Marvel has been temporarily thrown into a dystopian future, in which most of the world has been destroyed and the remains conquered by Namor the Submarine’s child and enchantress, Ove. Back in the present, Danvers has made it his mission to learn magic for the sole purpose of preventing Ove from taking over. Rebuffed by Doctor Strange, she sought the help of the unwitting enchantress and ultimately defeated Ove by removing his ability to use magic in the first place. Unfortunately, this is considered a serious crime by the magical community… and Doctor Strange warned Carol that she would eventually be punished by Earth’s magic users.
In Captain Marvel #39, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Juan Frigeri and Alvaro Lopez, Carol wakes up in a black void. She is tied to a chair and sits in front of Agatha Harkness, the Enchantress, Doctor Voodoo, and the other magic users in the Marvel Universe (except the recently deceased Doctor Strange. Death of Doctor Strange an event). The trial is not intended to determine Carol’s guilt, but her the penalty – and if it is recognized as missing, the court “…will remove [her] role…and find a suitable replacement.”
Even Captain Marvel fans will understand the court’s decision. Carol Danvers is consistently irresponsible in her actions and often justifies them with a “stronger is good” mentality – a holdover from the Second Civil War an event. While the court tests Carol, Binary remains on Earth and can even replicate Carol’s likeness and costume. This could be the “replacement” wanted by Agatha Harkness; Binary seems like a much more logical being than Danvers, but she’s also quite naïve, and that could potentially have disastrous consequences.
The binary can be manipulated much more easily than Carol Danvers. For all her stubborn flaws, she almost always acts of her own accord, despises following orders, and frequently ignores warnings (even from her friends like the Scarlet Witch). Carol Danvers can be replaced by Captain Marvelbut his eventual replacement may be little more than an unwitting puppet for Harkness and his court.
