Marvel is already on the right track with the presentation of the X-Men
Marvel eventually introduced mutants to the MCU but didn’t show the main event: the X-Men. However, their debut could have been set up by Ms. Marvel.
This article contains spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 6.
Ms. Marvel episode 6 officially confirmed Kamala Khan’s status as a mutant, so it looks like Marvel is following a tried and true tradition by introducing the x-men, reflecting past stories involving Snape and Jubilee. Ever since Disney’s acquisition of Fox was completed in 2019, Marvel viewers have been patiently waiting for the mutants and the X-Men team to show up in the MCU. Wishes were slightly granted with the cameo appearance of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhich was soon followed by the revelation of Kamala as the first official Earth-616 mutant, creating a clear opportunity for the X-Men’s eventual debut.
Through Ms. Marvel, the show teased that there was something different about Kamala’s genes. Initially, it was believed that her hard light powers came only from her great-grandmother’s bracelet, which was later revealed to be tied to her heritage as a Djinn from the Noor dimension. However, a small interaction between Kamala and Bruno at the end of Ms. Marvel episode 6, “No Normal”, revealed a “mutation“In His Genes, featuring the 1990s theme song X-Men: The Animated Series playing in the background, which also played during Professor X’s early moments in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessconfirming Kamala’s status as the MCU’s first mutant.
This thrilling reveal isn’t just a relief for enthusiasts x-men fans, but it also creates huge opportunities for the future of mutants in the MCU. Past television and film adaptations of the x-men comics have always had the task of introducing a large number of mutants to the public at once, and they’ve usually done so from the perspective of a younger mutant. Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel can easily fill that role and potentially bring the entire X-Men team to the MCU very soon.
How Kamala Khan Can Introduce More Mutants Into The MCU
There are two notable instances of the X-Men being introduced through the plot of a young female mutant being initiated into Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and learning about the team for the first time. First come X-Men: The Animated Series, the audience is immediately introduced to Jubilee, who is brought to Professor X’s mansion while being chased by Sentinels. And in the 2000 movie X Men, Rogue is the conduit for the introduction of the titular team while they are being stalked by Magneto.
This fits perfectly with the narrative direction taken by Mrs. Marvel. Throughout the series, the MCU’s damage control department pursues Kamala Khan and her friends using repurposed Stark drones. This perfectly mirrors the themes of previous adaptations and could easily lead to Kamala being taken in by Professor X and the X-Men. Narratively, this would be a great way to introduce multiple mutants at once, while still leaving enough unanswered questions for the MCU’s future to uncover.
With Kamala Khan’s energy and contagious curiosity, the X-Men would be well introduced to the MCU if she became the first established character to meet them. Questions about exactly where the mutants have lurked in previous MCU projects would still have to be answered, but showcasing the entire team in one go and then diving into their stories may be the best course of action for Marvel. With the Ms. Marvel reveal coming so soon after Professor X’s cameo appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessit won’t be long before x-men finally become a staple of the MCU.
