The Gray Man, Trying season 3
Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly What’s On will publish on Sundays.]
1. Netflix comes out expensive and star-studded The gray man
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo are ready with their next all-star ensemble action hit. That of the duo The gray man, reportedly the most expensive film Netflix has produced so far, features a galaxy of stars, including Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, Jessica Henwick and Shae Wigham . The spy drama follows skilled Gosling mercenary Court Gentry, aka Sierra Six, who accidentally discovers dark agency secrets and becomes the target of fellow psychopath Lloyd Hansen (Evans). Here is an excerpt from The audiovisual clubthe opinion of:
“For the most part, Netflix The gray man is a sacred delight. It’s a throwback to the days when studios could safely rely on throwing a few A-listers on an action script and some big blasts, giving it a competent director and having a hit on hands. It’s often funnier and more evasive than some of the recent James Bond films.
2. Try not to fall in love with British comedy Trying
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: British comedy Trying, a joint venture between the BBC and Apple TV+ created by Andy Walton, depicts the sweet, tragic and often hilarious journey of married couple Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall). When Nikki and Jason struggle to conceive and decide to adopt, they open a whole new box of challenges. Season 3 begins with two new episodes.
3. Primal by Genndy Tartakovsky is back
Adult swim, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: Emmy Award-winning animated series Primal by Genndy Tartakovsky begins its second season with two new episodes. Primitive is set in an anachronistic prehistoric world and depicts the bond between a Neanderthal named Spear and a Tyrannosaurus named Fang, who struggle to survive amidst the dangerous wildlife and people that inhabit their world. The show is a complete blend of horror, adventure, and fantasy.
4. Billy Porter goes behind the camera to Everything is possible
Prime Video, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Laid Billy Porter, star and Emmy winner, takes the director’s chair for Everything is possible, a coming-of-age romantic comedy centered on a teenage trans girl named Kelsa (Eva Reign). The cast includes Renée Elise Goldsberry, Abubakr Ali, Courtnee Carter, Kelly Lamor Wilson, Grant Reynolds and Caroline Travers. Here is an excerpt from The audiovisual clubthe opinion of:
Everything is possible may be flawed for what it fails to fully expand around the edges of its story, but the central relationship that holds the film together is so compelling that the rest doesn’t matter. Not just a story about trans teen survival, Ximena Garcia Lecuona has written a story of community prosperity through love, alliance, and symbiotic personal growth.
5. Apple TV+ launches a family series Best foot forward
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: The family show Best foot forward is based on the book Do not fall by Josh Sundquist, Paralympic athlete, motivational speaker and comedian. The series follows a 12-year-old boy named Josh (Logan Marmino), who is excited to go to public school after years of home schooling.
