Dwayne Johnson Just Put Another Nail In The SnyderVerse Coffin
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, the next DCEU movie, is set to be a fresh start for the franchise – and that’s not good news for the Snyderverse.
The rocks black adam is coming to theaters, and Dwayne Johnson’s passion project is set to take the DCEU even further away from the Snydervse. While the DCEU originally started as a follow-up to Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder Steel manthe franchise has seen a number of course corrections following divisive films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and troubled productions like Justice League. Currently, the DCEU canon after Zack Snyder’s Justice League is still in the air, but upcoming movies like black adam suggest that the franchise is effectively distancing itself from the SnyderVerse.
Although no DCEU movie after Justice League provided they technically rebooted what had been established in the Snyderverse, they also did not follow any major storylines from Snyder’s original five-movie plan. At the moment, the DCEU seems to be focusing on single-player stories that shouldn’t rely on the Justice League films, such as Shazam! Fury of the gods and black adam. The only exception seems to be the flash, which is expected to bring Michael Keaton’s Batman to the DCEU through a multiverse story and will also see the return of Ben Affleck’s Batman. That said, although this is a solo entry, black adam seems to be crucial for the future of the DCEU.
During DC’s Comic-Con panel in San Diego, The Rock teased that black adam will be “Using in a new era for DC movies.” While Dwayne Johnson hasn’t gone into detail about exactly how Black Adam will inform DCEU canon going forward, it’s clear that the film attempts to create its own mythology without relying on previous events in the Snyderverse. For example, the Justice Society of black adam seems like an established group of superheroes, which is interesting considering they were never mentioned in batman versus superman Where Justice League. Whereas DC Creative Director Jim Lee has said there are no current plans for a Zack Snyder Justice League sequel, it makes sense for black adam and future DCEU films will be treated as the starting point for a new phase in the franchise.
How Cavill’s Superman Can Fit Into The New DCEU Era
The Rock’s Black Adam vs. Henry Cavill’s Superman is something DC’s casual and dedicated audiences have been dreaming of seeing for a while. In fact, more than five years have passed since Henry Cavill shot his final Superman scenes for Justice League, black adam became the public’s main hope for the DCEU Superman to return. Shazam had teased this possibility with a Superman cameo at the end, except Superman’s face was never shown. At this time, it is unconfirmed if Henry Cavill’s Superman will appear in black adam. In fact, Dwayne Johnson revealed during SDCC that the outcome of a Black Adam vs. Superman fight depends on “who plays Superman.”
The lack of an official announcement regarding Henry Cavill’s return as Superman in black adam or any other DC project will likely be considered disappointing. Still, it suggests that the future of the DCEU is still not set in stone. The Snyderverse is clearly not continuing, at least not with Zack Snyder’s originally planned films, but there are elements of the Justice League saga that could still play a role in the DCEU depending on what future movies might need. For example, Amanda Waller will appear in black adamand the character of Viola Davis has been part of the DCEU since 2016 suicide squad.
In a way, Black Adam can be for the next few years of the DCEU what Steel man was for the early years of the franchise. Obviously, Black Adam is far from a moral center for super teams like Superman, but the character has enough potential to lead a new side of the DCEU. Between black adamThe promised new DCEU era, the flashthe history of the multiverse and the expansion of The Suicide Squad and DCEU TV, DC proves the franchise has left the Snyderverse.
