JUDAS PRIEST is the second band to receive the Music Excellence Award; the E STREET BAND Was the first. Last year, late OZZY OSBOURNE and CALM RIOT guitarist Randy Rhoads was one of the recipients of the Music Excellence Award.
When asked by the Arizona Republic how he felt when he found out that he and his bandmates were going to receive the Music Achievement Award from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame This year, Halford said, “Why didn’t they give us the same title as all our friends. BLACK SABBATH, for example. There’s a different label, isn’t there? I was furious. I was a little pissed off. In the end, does it matter?”
He continued: “Some days I say, ‘No, it’s okay. We are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Be grateful. Shut up the fuck.’ And then there are other days when I’m like, ‘God, why did they give us the award for musical excellence?’ Because it sounds very, you know, grand. “The award for musical excellence, reserved for blah, blah, blah.” And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I want to be with that group of musicians over there who have the performance or whatever else they have.'”
Halford added, “I don’t know why they gave us the Music Excellence Award. I have no idea. I just kinda thought to myself, ‘Well, SABBATH I got it. So why can’t we have that? Not that I’m jealous SABBATH. I’m just talking about that label they give it. Why do they put these labels on this fucking thing? Why don’t they go, ‘Welcome. You are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘ and leave it at that.
“A lot of our fans said, ‘What the hell is that?’ “Oh, you know, they’re a great group. It’s an excellent group.” “But why put Musical Excellence? Why not give them away like everyone else has?”
“I know it’s silly, but it’s just frustrating. And on the other side, it’s like, ‘Great. Everyone got that and we got screwed with it.’ [Laughs] JUDAS PRIEST are always the Rodney Dangerfield of heavy metal. They cannot be respected.”
