‘She-hulk’ Showrunner Excited for Marvel’s First Half-Hour Comedy

She-Hulk is about to bring it to the MCU. And when we say “that”, we mean to laugh. According to writer/producer Jessica Gao, the latest Marvel Disney series will be something the franchise has never seen before. Namely, a half-hour comedy starring a hardworking bachelor lawyer who is also 6’7′ tall and can throw a Buick across a football field.
Gao says we’ll see more sitcom tropes and less city block leveling action sequences in She-Hulk: Lawyer. It might not be what the average MCU fan might expect, but Gao is excited to explore the concept of half-hour comedy in all nine episodes of the upcoming season. She described her enthusiasm in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“I’m really excited that Marvel has a proper half-hour comedy and is really leaning into a comedy format. Everyone loves the big show – all the action happening on a level you don’t see anywhere else – but what’s special about TV is that you have the time and space to really live with it. a character and see everyday life. I want to know what happens on a Tuesday when the world is not in danger. What happens when a 6-foot-7 green woman has to buy a suit to go to court? »

While humor is certainly present in nearly every Marvel movie, She-Hulk will be the first Disney Plus streaming series to build on the concept. The decision to keep it funny may have come from the series’ source material in the original Marvel Comics books, specifically passages from writers John Byrne and Dan Slott. Although She-Hulk was originally a fairly traditional action hero for the first few years of its existence, John Byrne doubled down on the character’s intelligent personality and regularly broke the fourth wall to make Shukie nod and do a wink or even directly complain about Marvel’s editorial policies. the readers. Slott added more humanizing elements to the character, focusing on her relationship with herself and her alter ego, lawyer Jennifer Walters.
While many fans online complained about the show’s CGI values, many others responded positively to the humor of the first two trailers. The increased comedic element may land another hit for Marvel and Disney.
She-Hulk: Lawyer will begin streaming episodes on Disney Plus on August 17.
