‘Why are you doing this to your body?’ – M’sian tattoo artist is judged for his inked skin
Never judge a book by its cover, and it will serve as a solid reminder no matter where we are or who we meet.
Recently, a Malaysian tattoo artist and YouTuber Hishiko took to her Instagram account and shared her experience of being judged by a random uncle on the street. As a tattoo artist, it’s no surprise that her skin is covered in tattoos. But the uncle she met at a gas station doesn’t like what he saw.
“I don’t like tattoos!”
The uncle expressed his displeasure with the tattoos on Hishiko’s skin, to which she politely replied:
“Uncle, it’s fine if you don’t like it, but can you at least respect my career?” My husband and I are both tattoo artists, we have our own studio where we give tattoo lessons.
Still, this didn’t convince the uncle to respect Hishiko, to whom he told, ‘I do not like it ! Why are you doing this to your body?’
Hoshiko started to get angry but that’s when her husband appeared, and the uncle took a 360 degree turn where he apologized to the couple before getting into his car and leaving the gas station .
“Respect is all I expect”
In the 3-minute clip, Hishiko then continued and explained that she always expected a minor judgmentespecially from the elderly about the tattoos on his skin.
“You don’t have to like us, but please respect us. Did we do something wrong? Did we steal something from someone? Hishiko asked rhetorically.
She then continued and said, “I’m not your daughter or granddaughter, why should you say anything if you don’t like what you see?”
What increased her anger was the fact that the more polite she was to the uncle, the more rude he was to her, until her husband appeared and asked, “What is it? has ?
In the caption of her post, Hishiko, who has 10 years of experience in the tattoo industry, assured people that she never encouraged young minors to apply tattoos to their skin, nor forced anyone to “imprint” the tattoos on their bodies.
She never expected anyone to change their minds about tattoo artists, but one respect would have been enough. You can listen to the full clip here.
Getting your body inked might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Hishiko’s callback should be enough to let people know we’re not allowed to judge anything, or anyone simply because we don’t like what we see.
