‘No’ plunges 70% as ‘Top Gun 2’ nears $650 million
‘Nope’
Universal
In Friday box office news, Jordan Peele’s Nope suffered a significant drop of 70% with a gross of $5.84 million on day eight. This brings its domestic consumption to $67.8 million, mostly tied to its production budget of $69 million. As for the second Friday declines, this is indeed larger than the 65% decline for We in March 2019, and its likely $19 million second-weekend gross will essentially be tied to its $19.5 million (counting previews) at the opening day box office. As for the alleged 57% drop, it will be greater (but not absurd) than the 53% drop for Nope, but with much larger gross receipts. Still, the top-tier, R-rated, star-lite original will end on day ten with $81 million. Surprisingly strong weekday receipts prevented a halloween killslevel crash, because the film will cross the 100 million dollars next weekend.

marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder rallied somewhat on its fourth Friday, earning $3.751 million (-41%) to bring its accumulation to $292.2 million. We can expect a weekend of $13.1M (-42%) as the Taika Waititi-led sequel surpasses $300M domestic on day 24. We can talk about expectations, but Thor 4 will tie Thor 3 ($315 million in 2017 / $321 million adjusted) at the domestic box office as it ends up about as much worldwide as Ragnarok ($712 million) without China and Russia. Universal Minions: The Rise of Gru earned $3.31 million (-37%) on Friday for a likely weekend of $11.36 million (-37%) and a 31-day total of $321 million. It will pass Minions ($336 million in 2015) in the next week or two as it aims to achieve The secret life of pets and Despicable Me 2-gross level ($365 – $370 million).
Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick”
Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Paramount and Skydance Top Gun: Maverick earned an additional $2.4 million (-14%) on Friday for a likely tenth weekend gross of $8.83 million (-14%). This will be the third biggest release weekend behind Avatar and Titanic (and just before HEY since 1982). It will also likely push Tom Cruise’s $170 million legacy sequel past $650 million domestic, putting it within a week of his passing. jurassic world ($652 million in 2015) and Titanic ($659 million including the 2012 re-release) to be the seventh-highest-grossing national of all time. sony Where the Crawdads sing continued to stand out as the only “big” adult women’s film of the summer. Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in “Elvis”
Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s Elvis also benefits from the whole “adults also like to see movies at the theater” variable, earning an additional $1.7 million (-7%) on Friday for a likely weekend of $6 million (-9% ) and $129 million over 38 days. At this rate, the $85 million Austin Butler/Tom Hanks musical biopic could hit $150 million domestically before it even becomes a major awards season player. Again, say it with me now, Warner Bros. is more than Batman and Harry Potter. by Blumhouse The black phone earned $980,000 (-30%) on Friday for a weekend of $2.47 million (-30%) and a national 38-day total of $83.1 million. from Amblin Jurassic World Dominionwhich opened in Japan this weekend ($6.2 million in two days, which is solid for the territory renowned for its long legs), will earn $2.05 million (-34%) for a domestic consumption of $369.5 million as it passes The Batman.
