‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Directing Duo Sign Five-Year Pact With Universal – Deadline
Universal Pictures continues to build on its strong relationship with filmmakers by reaching an agreement for an exclusive five-year pact with directing duo, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as the Daniels, and their producing partner Jonathan Wang. Daniels’ unique brand of award-winning storytelling across visual media platforms spanned music, TV and film, most recently with the smash hit of Everything everywhere all at oncewhich has grossed over $100 million worldwide, becoming independent studio A24’s biggest film ever.
“Daniels are creators who have evolved their craft with a distinct vision and a singular voice that is unmistakable across the spectrum of content vying for viewers’ attention,” said Donna Langley, president of Universal Filmed Entertainment. Group. “Their films are remarkably theatrical and with only two original projects under their belt, they have only scratched the surface of what they are capable of as filmmakers. The deal marks another top director (or in this case directors) signing long-term deals with Universal Pictures, clearly showing Langley’s impact in building those strong relationships. Jordan Peele, whose thriller Nope just bowed out in theaters, signed a similar five-year pact given his close ties to the studio.
In addition to Everything everywhere all at once, Daniels and Wang have cultivated an enviable resume in music, television and film. First to rise to prominence through their innovative approach to making music videos with Lil Jon’s Refuse for whatThe Daniels won the 2016 Sundance Film Festival ‘Best Direction’ award for their film Swiss army man, with Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe. They have also made their mark on television projects by directing episodes of Showtime’s Become a God in Central Florida with Kirsten Dunst and Comedy Central Awkwafina is Nora from Queens. Daniels just announced that they will be directing and EPing a new half-hour comedy, Mason, for Showtime. The series, produced by A24, will be produced by Daniels, Wang, Steven Yeun, Nathan Min and Adam Kopp.
