When does it fit into Phase 6 of the MCU?
In Spider-Man: No Coming Home final scene, the audience sees Spider-Man in a brand new red and blue suit swinging through the streets of New York and, as the script says, “Peter Parker is gone, but Spider-Man still lives…”
The following Spider Man the film will be a fresh start for the character, but who, where and when that will happen remains unclear.
Will Tom Holland return as Spider-Man?
During the press for No coming home after the film’s release, Holland was surprisingly reluctant to return to the character. Holland praised the ending to his trilogy and said: “Part of me like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing into the sunset.”
To Holland’s credit, he portrayed his role in six different films (seven counting Venom: let there be carnage) as everyone’s favorite webhead and there’s a chance he feels like he’s given his all and would like to move on.
However, Holland is known for exclaiming how much he loves playing the character and even played a key role in bringing Peter Parker back to the MCU. In 2019, Holland reportedly called then-Disney CEO Bob Iger in hopes of bringing Spider-Man back to the MCU after news broke that he was leaving after Far from home.
When Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios reached another two-picture deal (a Spider Man movie and an MCU movie Holland would appear in), it seemed like the future was bright for Spider-Man’s place in the franchise.
Fast forward to summer 2022 and there’s no official update on a Spiderman 4 film; it’s not even known if the two studios have reached another character-sharing deal.
In reality, Holland is now an MCU veteran who’s been in some of the biggest movies in the franchise, is a growing movie star, and likely wants a massive new contract. In May this year, Sony chairman Tom Rothman said he hoped to get the “the whole group” back from a fourth Holland-directed film.
Earlier this summer, Jeff Sneider of The Ankler wrote “And while plans are afoot for another Spidey trilogy starring Tom Holland, I don’t believe he’s signed a deal yet, so those plans remain unofficial at this time.” He went on to add that he “certain that more Spidey adventures with Holland are a top priority for Rothman & Co…”
Sony has decided to drop Andrew Garfield and The Amazing Spider-Man franchise in order to bring the character into the MCU, bringing better results than its leaders could even imagine – two back-to-back billion-dollar films and the discovery of star Tom Holland, whom they want to lead their future Unexplored movies.
It would be shocking if Holland didn’t re-sign to a multi-picture contract playing Peter Parker for years to come. That being said, Marvel is moving forward with the rest of its multiverse saga, so where Spiderman 4 integrate into its future phases?
When will Spider-Man 4 be released?
Marvel CCO Kevin Feige got up on stage at Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con and not only revealed Phase 5 of the MCU, but also teased Phase 6 and the culmination of the multiverse saga.
Despite all the excitement, Spider-Man wasn’t mentioned, other than briefly in a post-panel interview.
It’s important to keep in mind that, despite Spidey’s absence, this isn’t a major sign of concern. When Sony and Disney revamped their new deal to No coming homethe MCU quickly changed its plans.
Before it was titled, No coming home was originally set to July 16, 2021, then November 5, 2021. At that time, this changed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from the same date in November to March 25, 2022. Thor: Love and Thunder has also been modified from February 18 to February 11, 2022.
Ironically, all of those changed dates were delayed, but it still proved that Marvel Studios is ready to adapt to a Spider Man solo movie.
Launch option 1: phase 5
Sony Pictures has been on time with its Spider Man movies since 2012. Spider Man has appeared on screen at least every two years since then.
From most recent memory, the Back home trilogy spanned only five years. If the studio wanted to continue at this pace, it would mean new live-action Spider Man the film will be released at the end of 2023.
Given the contractual circumstances and the fact that this next movie would likely start a new trilogy, that seems unlikely.
Here is the current MCU movie schedule for Phase 5:
- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – February 17, 2023
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – May 5, 2023
- Wonders – July 28, 2023
- Blade – November 3, 2023
- Captain America: New World Order – May 3, 2024
- Love at first sight – July 26, 2024
Although the summer season is already crowded, Sony Pictures could be looking at a summer 2024 release date. That would be around two and a half years later. No coming home and bring the character back to a season in which he was often released. The release months of Spider Man since the 2002 original are May (three), June (one), July (three), and December (one).
This would involve another change in release dates from Marvel and Disney, which has become normalized since the pandemic hit in early 2020.
Spiderman 4 in theory could be adjusted by mid-June 2024 with a possible pushback from the Love at first sight to August or September, completing Phase 5.
If Holland’s fourth Spidey movie doesn’t come out by then, it will be heading to Phase 6.
Launch option 2: phase 6
The possible June 2024 release date would have a domino effect on the start of Marvel’s sixth phase.
Here is the MCU movie schedule currently set for Phase 6:
- The Fantastic Four – November 8, 2024
- Avengers: Kang Dynasty – May 2, 2025
- Avengers: Secret Wars – November 7, 2025
In theory, it could still work. Phase 4 Movies Captain America: New World Order May 3, 2024, (hypothetical) Spiderman 4 arriving on June 14, 2024Love at first sight on September 6, 2024, then start of phase 6 with The Fantastic Four on November 8, 2024.
It’s a scenario, but what does Sony want another December release date, three years after the massive success of No coming home. Avatar 3 is set to release on December 20, 2024, but Sony could still choose to place Spiderman 4 two weeks earlier, on December 6, 2024. The MCU’s adjustment to this date would likely be The Fantastic Four either by moving until October or September, or by postponing it to the spring before The Kang Dynasty.
The Phase 6 schedule was mostly fillable, with eight empty time slots for potential projects. Two of these time slots have been allocated to the summer of 2025, between the two avengers movies. July 2025 could be a flagship investment for Spiderman 4straddling the top of The Kang Dynasty and continue the plot by heading towards Secret Wars.
In the same way, Captain Marvel was released between phase 3 avengers movies and drives in End of Gameand it grossed over $1 billion, despite mixed reception from critics and fans.
Especially if Spidey plays a central role in either film, this could be another smart deal between Sony and Marvel, splitting the character’s arc between the two. avengers movies and a solo adventure.
The final possibility is if a deal with Holland, the direction of a new trilogy, and a deal between the two studios are much further away than fans would expect.
December 2025, serving as an epilogue to Phase 6 (similar to Far from home finishing phase 3), might be a good time to Spiderman 4. This time there is no new Avatar juggernaut taking over the month and it could propel the MCU into its next saga.
As things stand, the possibilities are endless for when Spiderman 4 could be announced and published. All signs point to Sony Pictures wanting Holland back to lead the next trilogy, and history shows that Marvel Studios would be willing to alter its plans to make room for everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
