Community Bank brings personal finance class to Cape High

Over the last year, Cape Henlopen School District and Community Bank Delaware have been working together to provide an opportunity for interested students at Cape Henlopen High School to learn about managing their personal finances. “We had been exploring adding a personal finance course to our curriculum at the high school, so when the opportunity to partner with Community Bank Delaware came, it really was perfect timing,” said Dr. Michael Young, Cape Henlopen School District supervisor of secondary education. “This partnership allowed us to implement a personal finance course for the first time this school year, with three classes being offered and approximately 70 students who are elected to take the year-long course.” Foundations in Personal Finance is offered to students in grades 9-12, utilizing materials from Ramsey Solutions. “This program benefits our high school students in a number of ways,” said Bob Fulton, Cape Henlopen School District superintendent. “It breaks down financial planning and management in a way that is both informative and encouraging to the students, and ultimately sets them up with the tools they will need for a financially responsible future.” Foundations in Personal Finance has helped more than 5 million students nationwide, and over 45% of high schools have taught these influential lessons on budgeting, saving, spending wisely and more. Community Bank Delaware opened in 2006 and today has over $294 million in assets. “Community Bank Delaware was started by a group of local business professionals who wanted to focus on serving the needs of the community,” said William Jack Riddle, Community Bank Delaware president. What better way to continue that mission than providing early opportunities for our youth to learn the importance of managing their finances? We’re very proud of our partnership with Cape Henlopen School District, and we would encourage other local businesses to see about sponsoring other schools in Sussex County with the Ramsey Solutions curriculum. This education will make a difference to our youth.”
