This guy can sail the high seas without getting out of bed. A 28-year-old Meta employee has found a way to see the world — and be a couch potato, too. Austin Wells loves to travel, but hates long plane rides and giving up his daily routine. So he found a way to have both. The San Diego resident recently leased a room on the MV Narrative, an in-the-works residential ocean liner that offers patrons a more permanent way to cruise around the globe. “It’s just like owning a condo,” Wells told CNBC of the whopping $300,000 he paid for a 12-year lease for one of the ship’s 237-square-foot studios. “I’m going from this model where you want to go somewhere, you pack a bag, you get on a flight, you rent a room, to now my condo, my gym, my doctors and dentists, all of my grocery stores travel the world with me.” He’ll continue working for Meta while exploring the brainy depth, shifting his working hours accordingly as the MV Narrative passes through various European countries over the course of three years. CNBC Alister Punton, the CEO of Storylines, the company building the MV Narrative, is also eager to live aboard his creation — and plans to move onto it with his wife and two children once it’s ready to set sail in 2025. “The goal is to actually have a community of residents on this ship. And so you will make new friends, you will largely travel the world with them, which is a potentially way to create some of the deepest friendships you’ve ever had,” Wells told CNBC. “We have identified a really big market here. And there’s a lot of people who want to get involved and be a part of this.” In addition to more traditional cruise ship amenities, the Narrative will also feature private kitchens, a co-working space, medical services, a farmer’s market, private kitchens and 24-hour room service, the outlet reported.
